Top down or bottom up?

Very interesting article. Do you gather the pieces and impose meaning on them, or put up a framework and fill it in with details? It does seem iterative, alternating between the two. Sometimes you get so locked into a structure that you lose the freedom of hearing something new. The risk the other way is that you're overwhelmed with details that don't hang together.
